DescriptionWe are looking for a talented visual communications designer to work part-time (approx. 20 hours/week, but can be negotiable) from our office in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC. The Visual Communications Designer should be able to examine large amounts of data and create clear, compelling layouts, images, and other features that can stand on their own or complement research studies. The Visual Communications Designer will also provide visual design support and guidance to other Motiv projects.
Visual storytelling skills and experience in template-building and sorting and creating information hierarchies will be important. S/he should also be able to communicate ideas and design concepts effectively and translate content into powerful and concise PowerPoint presentations.
Successful applicants will be creative, collaborative, and comfortable brainstorming and iterating with a group of people with diverse backgrounds and skill sets.
The Visual Communications Designer will work with Motiv team members to conceptualize and produce graphical data narratives, design and develop infographics, and map and analyze data. The designer will also help create branded materials for online and print dissemination for both internal projects and client work. Duties will include extensive use of PowerPoint.
- Solid technical skills in PowerPoint, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
- Strong visualization and design skills, including color and typography
- Ability to create design solutions for both print and screen
- Preferably working towards a degree in illustration or graphic design
- Experience creating and managing visual information hierarchies with provided information
- Excellent spelling and grammar
- Highly self-motivated

Meet Ian, Director
Motiv’s engagement directors have daily interaction with our clients and have overall management responsibility for the various work streams involved in our consulting work. In addition, people like Ian scope projects and participate in business development as well as play a big role in mentoring junior staff. A consulting mindset, as well as strong analytical and communication skills are necessary in this role.
Meet Rebecca, Design Researcher
Design research professionals at Motiv scope and execute the field research that informs our innovation strategy work. People like Rebecca typically have design, sociology, and/or anthropology credentials, and are strong analytical, conceptual and visual thinkers. Leading--and often teaching--design thinking methods is highly important in this position.
Meet Colin, Consultant
Consultants drive the business and analytical thinking on projects, working collaboratively as part of a team that will likely also include a design-trained professional, Director, and a VP. Typical activities for Colin include industry research, consumer field research, presentation creation, client workshops, prototype building and financial modeling.
